Emergency Response Do's and Don'ts
Understanding the right approach in emergency situations can make a critical difference. Here are some important guidelines to follow.
DO'S
Stay calm and assess the situation
Take a moment to evaluate the scene for any dangers before approaching the victim.
Call emergency services immediately
Dial 911 or have someone else call while you begin providing care.
Position the victim properly
For CPR, ensure the victim is on a firm, flat surface with their airway open.
Use proper hand placement for compressions
Place hands in the center of the chest, between the nipples, and push hard and fast.
Allow for complete chest recoil
Let the chest fully return to its normal position between compressions.
Minimize interruptions in compressions
Keep pauses in chest compressions as brief as possible to maintain blood flow.
DON'TS
Don't delay starting CPR
Every second counts. Begin CPR immediately if the person is unresponsive and not breathing normally.
Don't perform CPR too slowly
Maintain a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute for effective blood circulation.
Don't push too shallowly
Compress the chest at least 2 inches (5 cm) for adults to ensure adequate blood flow.
Don't lean on the chest between compressions
This prevents the heart from refilling completely with blood between compressions.
Don't stop CPR unless absolutely necessary
Continue until professional help arrives, the person shows signs of life, or you're too exhausted to continue.
Don't forget to use an AED if available
Apply the AED as soon as it's available and follow its automated instructions.
Common Emergency Procedures
These basic procedures can help you respond effectively in common emergency situations. Our training courses cover these and many more scenarios in detail.
Responding to Cardiac Arrest
Check responsiveness
Tap the person's shoulders and ask loudly, "Are you okay?"
Call for help
Have someone call 911 or emergency services immediately.
Check breathing
Look for normal breathing for no more than 10 seconds.
Begin chest compressions
Place hands in center of chest and compress at least 2 inches deep at a rate of 100-120 per minute.
Give rescue breaths
After 30 compressions, give 2 rescue breaths if trained and willing.
Continue CPR
Alternate 30 compressions with 2 rescue breaths until help arrives or the person shows signs of life.
Recognize the signs
Look for universal choking sign (hands at throat), inability to speak, cough, or breathe.
Ask if they're choking
Confirm by asking "Are you choking?" If they nod yes and cannot speak, take action.
Position yourself
Stand behind the person with one foot between their feet and one foot behind you for stability.
Perform abdominal thrusts
Make a fist with one hand, place it thumb-side against the middle of their abdomen, just above the navel.
Apply quick upward thrusts
Grasp your fist with your other hand and press into their abdomen with quick, upward thrusts.
Continue until object is expelled
Repeat thrusts until the object is forced out or the person becomes unresponsive (then begin CPR).
Responding to Choking
Controlling Severe Bleeding
Ensure safety
Wear gloves if available. If not, use a plastic bag, clean cloth, or other barrier.
Expose the wound
Remove or cut clothing to clearly see the source of bleeding.
Apply direct pressure
Use a clean cloth, gauze pad, or your gloved hand to apply firm, steady pressure directly on the wound.
Elevate the injury
If possible, raise the wounded area above the level of the heart to help slow bleeding.
Apply pressure bandage
Once bleeding slows, apply a pressure bandage by wrapping the wound firmly but not too tightly.
Seek medical attention
Call 911 for severe bleeding or deep wounds that may need stitches.
Stop the burning process
Remove the person from the source of the burn and stop the burning process.
Assess the burn
Determine the degree and extent of the burn (1st, 2nd, or 3rd degree).
Cool the burn
For minor burns, run cool (not cold) water over the area for 10-15 minutes or apply a cool, wet compress.
Protect the burn
Cover the burn with a sterile, non-stick bandage or clean cloth. Do not apply butter, oil, or ointments.
Prevent infection
Keep the burn clean and change the dressing regularly.
Seek medical attention
For severe burns, large burns, or burns on the face, hands, feet, genitals, or major joints, call 911 immediately.
